Why UK Businesses Can’t Ignore Biodiversity Anymore

Okay, quick reality check. The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. Around 1 in 6 species here are at risk of extinction, and since the 1970s we’ve lost nearly half of our wildlife overall. That’s not just sad - it’s alarming.

And this isn’t just about cute hedgehogs or bees (although, yes, save them please). Nature literally keeps our economy running. Pollinators support UK crops worth hundreds of millions of pounds every year. Healthy soils grow our food. Wetlands reduce flooding. Forests store carbon. When biodiversity declines, businesses feel it too - through supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and climate impacts.

A lot of this damage has been driven by how we produce and consume things. Land use, pollution, overfishing, and carbon emissions, businesses are deeply connected to all of it. But that also means they’re in a powerful position to change it.

The UK government has committed to protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. That’s great, but policy alone isn’t enough. Companies need to go beyond the bare minimum. That could mean sourcing materials responsibly, cutting waste, restoring habitats, or investing in nature-based solutions.

And let’s be honest: people care. Especially young people. We’re paying attention to where we spend our money and who we work for. Businesses that step up for biodiversity aren’t just helping the planet, they’re building trust and future-proofing themselves.

Nature isn’t separate from the economy. It is the foundation of it.

If UK businesses want a stable future, protecting biodiversity isn’t optional anymore... it’s essential. 🌍💚
