The hidden importance of pigeons in the UK

You’ve seen them everywhere. In the park scrounging for bread. On top of buildings flying around. Anywhere and everywhere they fly around you. Everyone has their own view of pigeons; some find them annoying, some eat them, some like them. Nevertheless they are essentially citizens in the same way we are.
Pigeons as a whole have been on a worrying decline for years. Since 1970, the population of wild birds has decreased by 20%, due to the even worse decline of woodland and farmland birds (Gov.uk, 2025). You may see their behaviour as an unimportant spectacle, but their presence affects the ecosystem in ways that benefit us. So we must advocate for their survival.

Importance of pigeons to the ecosystem.
When pigeons peck at scraps on the ground, they aren’t being bird-brained. That pigeon is fulfilling a vital role for the ecosystem. Pigeons act as seed dispersers, and the seeds they don’t fully digest are excreted at optimal locations for plant germination (Prince, 2025). Their nitrogen-rich waste contributes to the growth and biodiversity of plants in an environment, which is beneficial because the more diverse a plant community, the more resilient the ecosystem is to changes like climate shifts and disease outbreaks.
Pigeons are our unsung heroes in urban environments as natural habitats there have been fragmented by buildings, roads, and other urban hellholes. As adaptable birds, they also serve as bioindicators: population fluctuations can signal environmental issues like habitat loss or pollution. They facilitate the movement of plant genetics across isolated areas caused by us.
Pigeons in the food web.
Pigeons are a divisive dish. Some cultures embrace them, others do not. For animals there is no such decision, as pigeons are necessary prey to maintain predator populations. Falcons, hawks, foxes and cats feed on pigeons for sustenance. If pigeons were to decline at the rate they are, there will be devastating consequences. Overpopulation of cats, foxes, hawks or falcons also means there’s food scarcity for these animals. To compete for food, they will do things in desperation that destroy green space: dig up soil, trample vegetation, over-forage in concentrated areas, and disrupt plant root systems. (Maier, 2018).
Historical significance.
Historically, pigeons were significant as messengers, notably during wartime. Pigeons foster cultural connections that aid conservation awareness. In cities, they help maintain cleanliness by consuming food waste that we negligently throw away, and this indirectly controls pests by preventing their growth. Their high-nesting habits also support stable populations, and this helps researchers understand ecological trends. By monitoring pigeon populations, we may gain a better understanding of broader ecological trends and challenges within the urban ecosystems they inhabit. A city full of pigeons is a useful bioindicator that the city is flourishing with sustainable life (MAWEB, 2025).
So the next time you see a bird. Don’t shoo it. Take the time to praise and respect their hidden, unseen work in making sure our world is fully operational. Pigeons are far more than urban fixtures; they are the hidden key to ecosystem health, food webs, and biodiversity. Their decline signals environmental distress, making their protection a necessity. If we start recognizing their underappreciated value for our daily lives, we can foster coexistence and ensure these birds continue to sustain the ecosystems we share.
